Assessment & Treatment Planning

A BCBA conducts a comprehensive assessment—looking at communication, behavior, and daily functioning—to build treatment recommendations centered on socially significant, meaningful skills for your child’s daily life.

What the Assessment Process May Include

Each assessment is individualized. A BCBA learns from caregivers, observes the child, and develops treatment recommendations. If services begin, progress is reviewed and the treatment plan is updated over time.

Step 1: Listen
Step 2: Observe
Step 3: Plan
Step 4: Review

The assessment process may include:

  • Caregiver interviews and questionnaires
  • Review of relevant medical, diagnostic, school, or therapy records when available
  • Direct observation of the child
  • Skill-based and behavior-focused assessment tools, when appropriate
  • Development of meaningful, measurable treatment goals
  • Recommendations for services, setting, frequency, and intensity

From Assessment to an Individualized Plan

The BCBA uses information gathered during the assessment to develop individualized treatment recommendations. The plan may identify strengths and needs, measurable goals, teaching and behavior-support strategies, recommended service settings and intensity, caregiver collaboration, and how progress will be evaluated.

Assessment may also examine the situations in which behavior occurs, what the child may be communicating or accessing through the behavior, and environmental factors that may be contributing to it. When appropriate, these findings are used to develop function-based support strategies and teach safer, more effective skills.

If services begin, ongoing observation, data collection, clinical review, and caregiver feedback are used to monitor progress. Goals and strategies may be updated as progress is evaluated and family priorities change.

Behavioral assessments completed by Empowered Journeys ABA are for treatment planning and are not diagnostic evaluations for autism or other medical conditions.
